Artist Statement

Everything begins with a basic foundation and over time, details and features are slowly molded into the works. I use shapes and simple sketches and gestures as the blueprints as well as the designs for complexity and intricacy for my art. The technique of adding and subtracting layers of shapes and values creates varieties of possible outcomes to choose from. Whether it is an intentionally mark or the removal of a line, these factors can manipulate the directions of my opinion. I have come to this realization as a child when I carved a face out of a rectangular Ritz cracker.

My obsession with lines and shapes had led me to my appreciation to draw characters and people. Like a child who looks at what is on the surface, I only see a drawing of a person as another person without the indication of race, ethnicity, sexuality, or gender. I do not have prejudice of a person based on their physical appearance, but only to adore the beauty they hold. Everyone is equal, but it is these physical attributes that are used to give life, personality, and uniqueness into the subject. Although many people tried to find a deeper meaning or reasoning behind the artwork, I merely admired art for its aesthetic values.

Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” As people become busy with their reality, they begin to lose the creativity and understandings for art. In order to retain that part of our mind, I believe people should not overlook the subject, but to see things from a simple perspective. Even though I am gradually getting older and wiser, my mind is still drifting around Neverland with my imagination.

My New Artist Statement (Pre)

Although we do not speak the same language, but we can all understand the meaning behind something simple as a symbol. This idea had always been my guidelines to why I am inspired by art and how I can communicate to others. My works starts out with a simple sketch or gesture because it represents the innocence and simplicity that was once rooted in my childhood. I have always drawn these “symbols” throughout my life as my base to my work. I need that familiarity and comfort because this is how I can understand my subject and my work.

My works are meant to be seen and understood by people of all ages. Children, artists, and doctors should be able to see a triangle on top of a square, and realize that symbolizes a house. The complexity of the art work has been stripped down to its bare blueprints, yet a person with little knowledge of art can still figure out what it was still fascinates me. So this idea had always lead me to question, “Why do these two shapes that we see every day, represent a different object?” or “How do people know that this is this?” The world is diverse with different culture and custom, but within the group, art is present, and it starts with shapes and symbols.

In order to understand art, I believe that people should begin with the basics and think like a child. Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” As people enter into the adult world, they become busy that there is hardly any time to practice creativity. This law of life also applies to me; however, I will not let it stripe me of my imagination. In my own world that is similar to Never-land, I still believe that I still think a 10 year old kid.
